Breathing Exercises For Asthma

Asthma is a breathing disorder caused due to the narrowing and inflammation of the airways in the lungs. Wheezing, breathlessness, rapid breathing and cough are some prominent symptoms of asthma. These symptoms may only aggravate with poor breathing techniques. The breathing patterns have to be manipulated with deep breathing, relaxation sessions and other exercises. These techniques that improve the breathing are known as breathing exercises and will help the patients to control their respiratory muscles and improve their condition.

Pranayama, a set of breathing exercises in yoga and Buteyko, a Russian method if breathing exercises for asthma are the two main types of breathing exercises that are helpful in asthma. Yoga is a powerful therapy that is being widely used to reduce the severity and frequency of asthma attacks as well as the use of medication. Yoga and pranayama when done consistently, increases the airflow, air capacity, stamina and efficiency of the lungs in patients. Pranayama is an effective breathing technique of yoga that helps to maintain relaxed and controlled breath. Pranayama is a sanskrit word meaning "control of the life force". To achieve control over the life force, two steps are to be followed - control of the body through posture and control of breath.

There are three phases in pranayama exercises - puraka or inhalation, kumbhaka or retention and rechaka or exhalation. Puraka stimulates the system and fills the lungs with fresh air, Kumbhaka raises the internal temperature and increases the absorption of oxygen and rechaka causes the diaphragm to return to its original position besides forcing out air full of toxins and impurities by the contraction of inter-costal muscles. Pranayama exercises should be practiced depending on what triggers the asthma attack. Dirga pranayama, Naadi Shodhana, Ujjayi pranayama, Shitali pranayama and Kapalabhati pranayama are some exercises that can be followed in asthma.
